6th National Safety Day

National Safety Day 2011 was commemorated on 26th December 2011 at Kaththankudy Cultural Centre in Batticaloa District. Hon Prime Minister D.M.Jayarathne, graced the occasion as the chief Guest.
Hon.Mahinda Amaraweera Minister of Disaster Management, Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama Governor of the Eastern Province, Hon. Shivaneshan Chandrakantha Chief minster Eastern Province, Hon. A.L.M. Hisbulla, Deputy minister of Child Development, Women Affairs, Hon.Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan Deputy Minister Resettlement , Mrs.S.M.Mohamed Secretary Ministry of Disaster Management and Major General Gamini Hettiarchchi(Retd.) participated at the commemorative ceremony. Two minutes silence was observed to remember the victims of Natural and human induced disasters

Early Warning Simulation Drill

A successful Tsunami Simulation drill was held on 20th of December 2011 operating Early warning towers established in fourteen coastal districts.
Disaster Management centre conducted the above Simulation drill with the participation of people living in coastal areas.

The tropical cyclone “THANE” in the bay of Bengal, has entered Indian land by early morning today(30th).The bad weather conditions prevail in the Northern sea areas of the Island is expected easing off.Mainly dry and cold weather will over the Island.

2010-2011 World Disaster Reduction Campaign

A Stakeholder meeting on Resilient City Program was held at the Public Library Auditorium Batticaloa on
20th December 2011 organized by Municipal Council, Batticaloa. Disaster Management Center together
with Practical Action, Asian Disaster Preparedness Canter and UNDP facilitated the event.
Honorable Mayor of Batticaloa MC, Sivageetha Prabakaran is a signatory to the Global campaign of the
Resilient Cities launched by United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Officers of DMC and UNDP met District Secretary Vauniya

Officers of DMC and UNDP and UN OCHA met District Secretary Vauniya on 13th of December 2011 and discussed the progress of the development of the emergency contingency plan for Flood, building the capacity of District planning Unit to interpret Disaster related information establishing a proper Database for Disaster Management and the use of outcome of Integrated Environmental Strategic Basements.
