National Tsunami Simulation Exercise scheduled on 05th of September 2018.

This Regional and National Tsunami Simulation Exercise is scheduled on 5th of September 2018 with the participation of seven Indian Ocean Rim Countries. In Sri Lanka, the activation and coordination of this simulation exercise from National to local level is entrusted to Disaster Management Center (DMC).

Overarching Objective

The overarching objective of this regional and national scale exercise is to measure the physical as well as the human resource capacity and response times of the various stakeholders involved to address such a rare but potentially destructive tsunami event.

Specific Objective

1. To validate and evaluate the procedures for countries to receive the Tsunami Messages issued by the Regional Tsunami Service Providers (TSPs) through their National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC);

Heavy pre-monsoon rains in Sri Lanka continues from 20th May 2018, have killed at least sixteen people, and more than 130,000 people are affected in 20 District as of today.

Flooding and subsequent potential landslide threat has forced the evacuation of people in low-lying areas where four main rivers have reached flood levels currently at normal level except Attanagalu-Oya, while five districts (Kegalle, Kalutara, Galle, Ratnapura & Nuwara-Eliya) are on "red alert" for possible landslides.

Spill gates of reservoirs in North-western area had to be opened and 20 spill gates od Thabbowa reservoir has been opened. NBRO has still given landslide threat to Ratnapura, Kalutara, Badulla, Kegalle, Kandy, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, Colombo and Kurunegala due to earth slips, cut failures and rock falls.

South-west monsoon still suppressed by the persisting wind circulations and excepting to be settled by end of this week.

River water levels at many stations are gradually decreasing, in Kelani, Nilwala, Gin, Malwathu-oya, Maha-Oya rivers and some areas of Attanagalu-Oya river shows flood levels as of 25th May.

Heavy pre-monsoon rains in Sri Lanka from 20th to 26th May 2018, have killed at least twenty-four people, and more than 170,000 people are affected in 20 District as of today.

Water levels of main rivers are currently showing normal levels in many stations. However, one station is at Alert level in Kalu Ganga & Nilwala river falling slowly.

All major reservoirs are at normal level however, some of reservoir gates are opened for release of flowing water from other areas to reduce flood threat. NBRO has still given land-slide threat to Ratnapura, Kalutara, Kegalle, Nuwara-Eliya, due to potential earth slips and cut failures.

South-west monsoon has now established over Sri Lanka however air circulation is in the vicinity of south-west of Indian sea area and wind speed can be increased time to time.

All relief donating agencies are requested to work with Ministry of Irrigation, Water Re-sources and Disaster Management and may liaise with NDRSC for relief assistance related matters. Military troops are planned to mobilize to clean water wells and affected areas in next few days since many of water sources are contamination with polluted water in affected areas. Other agencies who are having this cleaning capability, are requested to be liaised with NDRSC and respective Divisional Secretaries

125,954 people (32,136 families) have been affected (the Disaster Situation Report , DMC & National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC) at 1000 hours on 24rd of May 2018).
NDRSC has provided 24.9 million cash allocations to the 12 District Secretaries to address the immediate needs of the affected populations.
